Martin Lewis has said all that should have needed to be said about the Capitol Albums, not that it will sway the millions of lazy and obstinate Americans who just can’t get wrapped around the fact that what they grew up with was unauthorised and wrong. There are a few singular things about the release that should be noted, however:
1. Apparently, this will be a worldwide release, which points out some degree of equity (and suggests that EMI is hurting for income)
2. Apparently, the individual titles will be restricted to the boxed set
3. Each disc contains mono and stereo versions of each Capitol LP (with the caveat that George Martin never intended for stereo mixes for the actual first Beatles LPs—Please Please Me, With The Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night and Beatles For Sale— to be issued; he recorded extra channels in order to create a “punchier” mono mix
Also, I’m tired of can’t-get-out-of-my-armchair pundits insinuating that the remix LP Let It Be… Naked (a much more worthy project) was a “failure”.
My thoughts exactly: the only surprise will be if there isn’t an October Surprise.
