Mary2

Tony Visconti says that there aren’t any unreleased Mary Hopkin tracks at Apple but there were 40 completed songs for his Good Earth label, most of which have yet to see the light of day. Apple weren’t nearly as comprehensive with the Iveys; they have to be in possession of at least an LP’s worth of unreleased material.

RPM promised a 2004 release date for their followup to their Apple Publishing compilation 94 Baker Street, an Iveys collection provisionally entitled How Much Is The Sky, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Out of Copyright?

This is a little troublesome: Capitol Records won a ruling against a classical label, Naxos, issued sessions made in the UK for The Gramophone Co in the 1930s that had fallen out of copyright, but that were determined to be still covered by common law. I am of two minds on the issue generally. It’s strange to see Elvis lapsing into the public domain in Europe. On the other hand, Elvis hasn’t been around to enjoy the fruits of his labours for a while, either.

Of course, the original bootleg records were illegal repressings of 78s that had gone out of print… EMI could just be licensing everything in their libraries and everyone would be happy.

New Order

Finding myself increasingly addicted to Law & Order: SVU (the one with Richard Belzer and Mariska Hargitay)—which is easy considering it’s something like 20% of USA Network’s nighttime schedule now.

Quick One

There’s a sample of “Go With It” up at Capitol.

Just An Observation

I’m as familiar with the works of Jonathan King as I care to be (e.g. not very), but his parole after serving half of a seven-year sentence for paedophilia makes me think that Warden Crichton from the Batman TV series is in charge of these early releases for evil celebrities.

Lenny Bruce once said we need a celebrity killing service, but I think a costumed vigilante would be a lot more fun.
