No surprise at all: The UK is still the “world’s biggest music buyer” according to the British Phonographic Industry. I can’t recall within my lifetime when the UK wasn’t the dominant music market. Having seen the mass appeal music has in the UK only reinforced what I already knew to be fact.
Meanwhile, nearly all of the local record stores in NE Ohio have closed. Most of the chains have left town. I had to laugh when it was suggested that a Virgin Megastore would open here in a delayed tandem with the House of Blues. They’d already turned people against buying records at least 20 years ago; it’s too late to reverse now.
For 16 days only, Abbey Road Studios are conducting a tour.
The second series of Avengers figures from Product Enterprise Ltd seem a lot more authentic than the first. It’s great that they corrected the spelling on “Colour.” The Gerry Anderson replicas look incredibly accurate.
A few notable release dates:
Ringo Starr, Ringo, reissued last week in Canada (Sentimental Journey had a Canadian reissue in January, both are still Apple releases, which makes me think we’ll see more apart from the rumours of many new Apple discs)
Aimee Mann, The Forgotten Arm, previewing now; released 3 May
Shelby Lynne, Suit Yourself ; released 24 May
Liz Phair, title not given, released 26 July
…and, to my astonishment, Nathalie Archangel’s third album Raven is getting a wide release on Astral Records after an alleged 1996 issue on Coyote that no one seemed ever to be able to find.
