I’ve always loved my Macs, and Leander Kahney’s The Cult of Mac is an entertaining ode to quality (brilliantly designed, but that’s not surprising considering the subject matter), but I draw the line at body art and the practice of spending five figures to upgrade Color Classics and outmoded original PowerBooks. I suppose the greater issue is that of benevolent “cults” such as cult TV and music fandom—“cult” is a pretty ironic choice of word considering that, on a grander scale, the world is (mis)run by cults. Fun or benevolent cults are all about connection, rather than control.
