LSL Productions is preparing a forthcoming documentary, Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him?), to include a multitude of television appearances, from the BBC specials to The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Playboy After Dark, even his appearance on The Ghost And Mrs. Muir; to his own promo films, music videos, home movies and clips from the unfinished documentary Did Somebody Drop His Mouse, shot during the recording of Son Of Schmillson.

I’ve always loved my Macs, and Leander Kahney’s The Cult of Mac is an entertaining ode to quality (brilliantly designed, but that’s not surprising considering the subject matter), but I draw the line at body art and the practice of spending five figures to upgrade Color Classics and outmoded original PowerBooks. I suppose the greater issue is that of benevolent “cults” such as cult TV and music fandom—“cult” is a pretty ironic choice of word considering that, on a grander scale, the world is (mis)run by cults. Fun or benevolent cults are all about connection, rather than control.
An Uncut survey places the Dylan single “Like A Rolling Stone” atop a list of music, films, television shows and books that changed the world. (“She Loves You” was third and The Prisoner was tenth.)
Rosanna Arquette, talking with Shelby Lynne in the August Interview, quoted Tom Petty saying that rock and roll has gone the way of jazz and the blues. I think that may be the thing that saves it. The IFPI has determined that the average age of music consumers is increasing. All of this points to an increase in sophistication and a return, of sorts, to quality issues that were seldom indulged in the 1970s.
What Paul McCartney said in the late 1960s, that pop music is the classical music of now, is true.
The release date for Liz Phair’s fifth LP, Somebody’s Miracle, was pushed back to 4 October (although the Japanese release date apparently remains unchanged). She is seen here (in QuickTime) promoting Ferrante’s Power Equipment.
